Woodworking Has Something For Everyone.

Working with wood is almost as old as humanity itself. Over the ages man has made pretty much everything out of wood at some time or another, from shelter to tools to childrens toys. Today we no longer have the need to make most things from wood, but wooden things have an enduring appeal, and learning and practicing woodworking skills can have a calming and almost spiritual effect.

Woodworking For Beginners - How to Get Started

The temptation when starting a new hobby is to think of something to make and dive right in. This might work but is more likely to end up in frustration, time wasted and maybe extra expense. So before you rush to make that bespoke staircase, here are a couple of things to think about:

Setting Up Your Workspace - where are you going to practice your new passion? Remember there is likely to be dust so you need good ventilation, you will definitely need good light and a sturdy bench or table to use for sawing, drilling etc. You are also likely to need a power source, so make sure you are close to a plug, or can run an extension cable.

Also think about access, you are likely to want to be able to bring pieces of wood into your space, but you will also need to take the finished articles out! You don't want to be like a ship in a bottle, stuck in a small space because you forgot to measure the width of the door to get your creation out.

Tools - For beginners, starting with a drill and a circular saw is advisable, as these tools are versatile and capable of handling various tasks. A compact drill, for example, is ideal for lightweight woodwork, featuring a 300-watt motor that allows for two speed settings: 450 RPM and 1500 RPM, making it easy to adapt to different materials and situations. If you are tight on budget then a few simple hand tools could be the way to go. No toolbox is complete without a hammer and a mallet. These tools are essential for a range of tasks, from driving nails to assembling joints. A claw hammer is versatile and suitable for most applications, while a mallet, being softer, is better for tasks where you wish to avoid damaging the wood. Let's not forget the essentials: a good tape measure and a combination square. You can always add sanders and routers, etc., afterwards, but you won't get far without being able to accurately measure distances and angles.

You also shouldn't forget some essential safety gear, at a minimum I would suggest some safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves, which help safeguard against cuts and splinters.

Most importantly you need to have a plan. There are many resources for free plans online. But not having a plan is like setting out for a new town without a map ( and yes I am including Google Maps! ) or directions. Check out our links to extra resources at the top of the page.

After the economic downturn of 2009, Ralph decided to take action and set up his own personalized woodwork shop.

“I ended up enjoying this small 10’ x 10’ shop even more than my larger shop! Everything just connected so well. And it might sound strange… but in this “small” workshop. I just felt more like a craftsman. I shared my new small shop system with my students. I showed them exactly what I had done. One step at a time.” says Ralph.

Ultimate Small Shop now shares the same novel idea to set up a fully equipped workshop where anything can be made without the required large spaces or loads of money. The book carries hundreds of pages of instructions, advice, strategies, price guides and resources to guide woodworkers to set up their very own ultimate workshop.
